Laos and Timor-Leste Introduce 30-Day Visa-Free Travel

Laos and Timor-Leste have launched a 30-day visa-free travel arrangement for citizens holding ordinary passports, effective 15 August. Under the agreement, nationals of both countries can visit each other without a visa for up to 30 days.

Previously, the two countries signed a visa exemption deal for official and diplomatic passport holders on 8 October 2024. In May 2025, the agreement was expanded to include ordinary passport holders.

The two governments also signed a long-term agreement in 2024 on land and property exchanges to establish embassies in each other’s capitals, further strengthening bilateral relations.

Timor-Leste has been an ASEAN observer since November 2022 and is set to become the bloc’s 11th member at the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur this October. The announcement was made by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who currently serves as ASEAN Chair for 2025.

Earlier, in July, Laos and Belarus also signed an agreement allowing visa-free travel for citizens holding national passports.
