Philippines Quake: 6.9 Magnitude Tremor Leaves 18 Dead, Prompts Class and Work Suspensions

Most areas in Negros Occidental, Philippines, suspended classes and government work on Wednesday after a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck Cebu province Tuesday night and was felt across the region.

The Office of Civil Defense-Negros Island Region reported widespread suspension of classes at all levels, while several cities and municipalities also halted government work. Officials said the move was necessary to allow authorities to inspect structures, conduct damage assessments, and minimize risks to the public.

Disaster councils immediately convened to carry out rapid structural checks and needs analysis. Private offices and establishments were also urged to assess their facilities to ensure the safety of employees. In northern Negros, disaster teams reminded motorists to exercise caution along major highways, while some parks and public spaces were temporarily closed for inspection.

In Cebu, at least 18 people were confirmed dead, most of them in northern areas directly affected by the quake. Provincial authorities said coordination with national agencies and the Office of the President has been initiated to mobilize reinforcements. Local disaster teams continue to assess the extent of damage across affected towns and cities.

Several fatalities included uniformed personnel. Local incident command centers have been established to oversee rescue operations, risk assessment, and aid distribution.

One of the most heavily damaged structures was the Archdiocesan Shrine of Sta. Rosa de Lima, which collapsed during the quake. Videos of the church’s collapse circulated widely on social media, prompting the Archdiocese of Cebu to release a prayer message for protection and healing. Officials also ordered the closure of damaged bridges pending safety inspections.

In Metro Cebu, inspections were conducted on hospitals, city halls, and public buildings. Light vehicles have been allowed to pass through the Cebu-Mactan Bridge while structural assessments continue.

Authorities urged local officials to be proactive in assisting their constituents and to report needs directly to provincial emergency centers. Inspections of schools, public offices, and other facilities are ongoing, as aftershocks remain possible.
