Rehearsals for the Royal Barge Procession to Mark His Majesty the King’s 72nd Birthday

The Royal Thai Navy is scheduled to conduct 12 rehearsals for the Royal Barge Procession along the Chao Phraya River, comprising 10 minor rehearsals and two full-dress rehearsals, followed by one final rehearsal.

The upcoming Royal Barge Procession on 27 October 2024 is part of the celebrations on the auspicious occasion of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua (Rama x)’s sixth-cycle (72nd) birthday, 28 July 2024. It will be organized for a royal journey to present kathin robes to Buddhist monks at Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn) in Bangkok.

The 10 minor rehearsals will be held on 1, 8, 15, and 22 August, 3, 12, 19, and 26 September, and 1 and 10 October. The two full-dress rehearsals will be on 15 and 22 October. The final rehearsal will take place on 24 October.

The chanting of boat songs will also be arranged during the Royal Barge Procession. This time there will be five verse chapters, composed by Rear Admiral Thongyoi Sangsinchai, a retired naval officer.

The royal barge procession on 27 October 2024 will be the second in the present reign. The first one took place on 12 December 2019, which made it the concluding chapter in the Coronation of His Majesty the King. This ceremonial water-borne procession is a rare spectacle, arranged on special occasions only.

On this occasion, the Royal Thai Navy will organize an exhibition in honor of His Majesty the King on 27-28 July 2024, with a display of three major royal barges (the Suphannahong, the Narai Song Suban King Rama IX, and the Anantanakkharat) at the Ratchaworadit pier. People may view the exhibition at the Royal Thai Naval Institute on Arun Amarin Road. They are encouraged to wear yellow shirts in joining the exhibition.
