The Government has assigned the Royal Thai Army to fully protect Thailand’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, following rising tensions concerning Thailand-Cambodia border situation.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, as acting Prime Minister, Phumtham Wechayachai, on the afternoon of 24 July 2025, chaired a meeting of the National Security Council to discuss border clashes and Cambodia’s actions that violate Thailand's sovereignty.
Cambodian forces have reportedly initiated attacks with heavy weapons and without clear targets, leading to civilian casualties. These actions undermine public safety and Thailand’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, resulting in economic impacts and threats to national security.
The border clashes took place on the morning of 24 July in four provinces, namely Ubon Ratchathani, Si Sa Ket, Buri Ram, and Surin. The latest report showed that 14 Thai people died, including 13 civilians and one soldier, and 46 others were injured.
The meeting told the army to handle the issue in accordance with the severity of the situation. All relevant agencies were instructed to ensure the safety of the people in the areas and provide remedies for affected persons.
The Ministry of Education has ordered the temporary closure of schools in risk areas. Regarding measures on foreign affairs, the Government has downgraded diplomatic relations with Cambodia and called the Thai Ambassador to Cambodia back, as well as requesting the Government of Cambodia to recall its Ambassador to Thailand.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs was also instructed to issue formal protest letters and internationally condemn Cambodia over its violations of Thailand’s sovereignty and obligations under the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention.
