Thai Authority Warns Public About Surge in Border-Related Fake News

Thailand's Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (DES) has debunked a surge of false stories circulating online about alleged Thai-Cambodian border violence.

The most viral fabrications claimed Thai soldiers had assaulted and beheaded Cambodian troops, while another lie alleged 140 Thai soldiers died near Preah Vihear Temple. Both stories proved entirely false.

According to DES, officials reviewed over 955,000 online messages in one week, identifying 128 confirmed cases of misinformation. The fake stories originated from manipulated images of a July 27 humanitarian operation where Thai soldiers respectfully returned the remains of 12 Cambodian soldiers to their families.

The ministry warned that such false narratives fuel public fear and confusion during tense periods. Citizens are urged to verify information through official sources and report suspected fake news via the Anti-Fake News Center hotline (1111).
