Royal Thai Army Welcomes ICRC for Visit to Inspect 18 Surrendered Cambodian Soldiers

On 5 August 2025, the Royal Thai Army and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs facilitated a visit by representatives from the International Committee of the Red Cross, or ICRC, regional delegation, in Bangkok to inspect 18 surrendered Cambodian soldiers in custody in the 2nd Army Area.

The objective of the inspection was to witness the living conditions of the surrendered soldiers and to affirm Thailand's obligations under the Geneva Conventions in conforming to humane treatment standards for prisoners of war.

The ICRC representatives were granted unrestricted access and allowed to speak privately with all 18 detainees without any time limits. Medical evaluations were also conducted during the visit, with no signs of abuse or mistreatment found. The findings refute earlier claims made by some media outlets that detainees had suffered harm while in custody.

Consistent with ICRC regulations, no Thai officials or members of the media were allowed to observe the ICRC inspection. This measure ensures the neutrality and confidentiality of the monitoring process, and Thai authorities confirmed full compliance with all ICRC protocols throughout the visit.
