Thailand's Minister of Foreign Affairs has announced plans to convene a meeting of Ottawa Convention member states to address Cambodia's alleged deployment of anti-personnel landmines along the Thai-Cambodian border and discuss coordinated approaches for preventing future incidents along the disputed area. The meeting comes in response to an incident on 12 August 2025, when a Thai soldier stepped on a PMN-2 landmine near the Ta Muen Thom temple area. Following the incident, Thailand formally notified the United Nations and reached out to Japan, which currently chairs the Ottawa Convention, seeking urgent international intervention.
Scheduled to be held on 15 August 2025 in Bangkok, ASEAN partners, Japan, and Ottawa Convention member states will join Thai military and civilian agencies in reviewing field evidence and deciding on coordinated measures, while Cambodia has declined the invitation.
