Diplomatic Delegation Visits Si Sa Ket to Witness Evidence of Anti-Personnel Landmines Planted by Cambodian Forces

A 33-nation diplomatic delegation visited Si Sa Ket Province on 16 August 2025 to witness evidence of anti-personnel landmines allegedly planted by Cambodian forces on Thai soil.

The delegation was led by Minister of Foreign Affairs Maris Sangiampongsa, together with Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Russ Jalichandra and representatives from the Royal Thai Army and the Ministry of Interior.

The 36-member delegation comprised diplomatic representatives from ASEAN member states and Ottawa Convention signatories, representing 33 countries and one organization and two international organizations. Thai and international media also accompanied the group during the field inspection.

This field visit followed a briefing session held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 15 August, when diplomatic corps and Ottawa Convention-affiliated international organizations were informed about Thailand's concerns regarding Cambodia's alleged use of landmines along the border.

The delegation examined areas where landmines had reportedly been placed by Cambodia, as well as civilian locations damaged by what Thai authorities described as indiscriminate attacks by Cambodian forces. Representatives from the Royal Thai Army and the Ministry of Interior provided technical support during the visit.

Foreign Minister Maris said that he had attended an informal consultation "tea chat" on the Thai-Cambodian border situation with the foreign ministers of China and Cambodia, during the sidelines of the 10th Mekong–Lancang Cooperation (MLC) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Anning, Yunnan, China.

Thailand has prioritized and actively promoted urgent demining operations along the border for the safety of the people and as part of the implementation of the ceasefire agreement reached by the General Border Committee (GBC). China expressed its readiness to support both sides in this matter. However, it is regrettable that Cambodia has not yet cooperated with Thailand in demining operations along the border, citing the unfinished survey and demarcation of the land boundary, despite the fact that the leaders of both countries had previously agreed to it.  Nonetheless, Thailand considers this issue urgent and humanitarian in nature and remains determined to proceed with demining along the border as soon as possible, with the continued support of friendly countries.
