Thai MGA Leads 33-Nation Diplomatic Delegation to Survey Cambodia’s Landmine Situation

Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa and Vice Foreign Minister Russ Jalichandra led a significant diplomatic delegation to Si Sa Ket province on 16 August to witness evidence of anti-personnel landmines allegedly planted by Cambodian forces on Thai soil.

The 36-member delegation comprised diplomatic representatives from ASEAN member states and Ottawa Convention signatories, representing 33 countries and one organization and two international organizations. Thai and international media also accompanied the group during the field inspection.

The delegation examined areas where landmines had reportedly been placed by Cambodia, as well as civilian locations damaged by what Thai authorities described as indiscriminate attacks by Cambodian forces. Representatives from the Royal Thai Army and the Ministry of Interior provided technical support during the visit.

The field trip followed a briefing session held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs the previous day, where diplomatic corps and Ottawa Convention-affiliated international organizations were informed about Thailand's concerns regarding Cambodia's alleged use of landmines along the border.
