Air Chief Marshal Prapas Sornchaidee, the Director of Joint Press Center on the Thailand - Cambodia Border Situation gives his statement in response to recent social media posts and publications
by the Cambodian side portraying the alleged suffering of innocent civilians and attributing such hardship to Thailand’s actions, intended to generate emotional reactions and misunderstanding within the international community, with the following facts.
First, the current tensions along the border originated from actions taken by the Cambodian side, including troop movements, the use of force, and activities in disputed areas, which constitute violations from established agreements and long-standing practices previously observed by both sides.
Second, Thailand’s operations have been conducted strictly in accordance with the inherent right of self-defense under international law. These actions were limited, based on necessity, and proportionate, aimed solely at deterring threats and safeguarding Thailand’s sovereignty. They were not directed against civilians, nor intended to cause harm to innocent people.
Third, the selective use of emotionally charged images or narratives without proper context distorts the reality on the ground and risks misleading the international community about the true cause of the situation, which stems from decisions and actions taken by the Cambodian leadership itself.
Thailand remains firmly committed to humanitarian principles, the protection of civilians, and the peaceful resolution of disputes. Thailand continues to cooperate with international mechanisms and remains open to verification based on facts and transparency.
The Director of Joint Press Center reiterates that Thailand’s position has been met with understanding and support from the international community, as it is grounded in legitimacy, responsibility, and respect for international law. Thailand calls on all parties to communicate responsibly and to refrain from using civilian imagery or narratives as tools for political messaging or information warfare.
“Thailand’s actions constitute lawful self-defense under international law; current tensions arose from decisions taken by the Cambodian side, not from actions taken by Thailand.”
