Thailand Reaffirms Its Commitment to the Joint Statement between Thailand and Cambodia

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a press statement on 7 October 2026, reaffirming Thailand’s commitment to the Joint Statement between Thailand and Cambodia, and the importance of building trust and confidence toward a peaceful and sustainable resolution between the two countries.

The statement says, “In response to the Cambodian media reports on an interview with the Prime Minister of Cambodia, alleging that the U.S. urged Thailand to stop any activities that increase tensions or encroach on Cambodian territory, as well as Cambodia’s call for a meeting of the Thailand-Cambodia Joint Boundary Commission (JBC),

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs clarifies that the recent discussions between Thailand – U.S. high-level officials, particularly between the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand and the U.S. Secretary of State, including the Deputy Prime Minister’s latest discussions with the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State in New York on 24 September 2026 and with the U.S. Ambassador to Thailand on 5 October 2026, did not reflect what was reported by the Cambodian media. This is yet another example of Cambodia’s pattern of distorting facts for domestic political gain, which does not contribute to building trust and confidence, and undermines efforts toward resolving issues between the two countries.

“Thailand reaffirms its commitment to resolving differences with Cambodia peacefully through dialogue and existing bilateral mechanisms. Thailand has strictly adhered to the Joint Statement agreed by both countries in December 2025. As for the meeting of the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC), which is a technical body, it will be able to proceed effectively under a conducive atmosphere of bilateral relations. In particular, the border situation must be safe and secure, including security from landmines and threats posed by transnational criminal networks, in order for the relevant technical officials to carry out duties with safety.

“In this regard, Thailand calls on Cambodia to refrain from all forms of provocation, including at international fora and dissemination of false and unconstructive narratives, to foster mutual trust and confidence, with a view to working together in finding a peaceful and sustainable resolution.”
