Queen Sirikit: The Benefactress of the Land

Recognized as Mother of the Land, Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother lived a long and remarkable life, whose compassion united the Thai Kingdom and dedication inspired generations. Her Majesty was a true symbol of Thai grace, the benefactress of the land.

Soon after the royal wedding in 1950, King Rama IX and Queen Sirikit started their journey on a familiarization trip throughout Thailand. Their Majesties encountered the harsh conditions in which their subjects lived and scraped for their livelihood. As King Rama IX sought ways to eliminate hardship and poverty in the land, Queen Sirikit tried her best to support his work, focusing on supplementing people’s household incomes with crafts and other works.

Both later spent the greater part of each year visiting various regions of the country, with regional palaces set up as royal headquarters. The King and Queen set out to personally follow up and supervise uncountable projects initiated to help their subjects, especially the underprivileged in remote rural areas of the country.

Whenever and wherever a disaster struck, King Rama IX and Queen Sirikit would be promptly present among the people. They worked out assistance plans and diligently pursued the results to make the despondent self-reliant again.

With her great compassion and keen aesthetic sense, Her Majesty Queen Sirikit initiated various projects to improve rural life, livelihood, and the environment in all localities visited by her. Fine artistic skills and craftsmanship in the area, natural resources, and folk traditions were brought in to help impoverished people earn extra income. In this way, there emerged invaluable craft items, admired as works of art. Her Majesty seized every opportunity to emphasize that they were created by the hands that tilled the land and produced food for the world.

Owing to such keen concern for the people’s livelihood, Her Majesty Queen Sirikit initiated conservation programs for watershed areas, forests, plants, wildlife, and marine life all over the country. And from her great kindness and compassion toward all lives, the highly regarded conservation and rehabilitation programs were instituted in all areas, many initiated by Her Majesty, and others in response to her concerns or in her honor on various significant occasions.

The Queen was responsible for reviving a host of dying arts, breathing new life into ancient crafts and performing arts such as the khon masked dance drama. Her Majesty also saved endangered species of fauna and flora from the brink of extinction and thereby enlivened the dying land, nearly depleted of life in several areas of the country.

Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother was a source of inspiration and the subject of real affection and devotion among the Thai people, realized and felt beyond the borders of Thailand. Her Majesty was the benefactress of the land and the image of what is beautiful in humanity.
