Presentation Ceremony of the Prince Mahidol Award 2022

Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, as the Representative of His Majesty the King, will preside over the presentation ceremony of the Prince Mahidol Award 2022 at the Chakri Maha Prasat Throne Hall on Thursday, 26 January 2023.

The Prince Mahidol Award 2022 in the field of Medicine was awarded to Professor Ralph A. DeFronzo (USA), for his research on the mechanisms of diabetes and obesity.

The Prince Mahidol Award 2022 in the field of Public Health was awarded to three persons, namely (1) Dr. Douglas R. Lowy, M.D. (USA), (2) Dr. John T. Schiller, Ph.D (USA), and (3) Professor Ian H. Frazer,  MB.ChB, M.D. (Australia/UK), for their studies that led to the HPV vaccine.

There were 88 persons and organizations from 34 countries nominated. The Scientific Advisory Committee carefully screened all candidates from the years 2019-2022 and subsequently submitted a short list of candidates to the International Award Committee, who made a recommendation to the Board of Trustees. Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn chaired the meeting of the Board of Trustees, held on 31 October 2022, during which the final decision on the Prince Mahidol Award 2022 was made.

This award is organized by the Prince Mahidol Award Foundation, which was established on 1 January 1992 in commemoration of the centenary of the birth of His Royal Highness Prince Mahidol of Songkla. The Foundation is under Royal Patronage, with Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn as President. It annually confers the Prince Mahidol Award, consisting of two fields, medicine and public health, upon individuals or institutions that have demonstrated outstanding and exemplary contributions to the advancement of the world’s medical and public health services.

The Prince Mahidol Award comprises (1) certificates (2) medals, and (3) prize money of 100,000 US dollars each. From 1992 to 2021, a total of 90 individuals and organizations have received this award.
