Her Majesty Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana intends to preserve the performances of the khon masked drama, which had been given a new lease of life by Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother.
Khon is a form of Thai dramatic art that has its own unique identity, incorporating different fields of the arts, literature, rituals, and crafts. It involves graceful dance movements, instrumental and vocal renditions, and glittering costumes.
“Khon Masked Dance Drama in Thailand” was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2018, thanks to the great contribution of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, who called for the revival of the khon performance, which was falling into decline.
Both His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua and Her Majesty Queen Suthida have continued to preserve this masked drama and constantly attend khon performances, organized by the Foundation for the Promotion of Supplementary Occupations and Related Techniques (SUPPORT).
On 19 November 2020, Her Majesty Queen Suthida paid a private visit to the Ko Koet SUPPORT Center in Ayutthaya Province to learn more about khon and watch an open-air khon performance. Her Majesty is determined to promote khon performances, in accordance with the guidance given by Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother.
In her remarks delivered at the opening of the Thai Women’s Day celebration in 2019, Her Majesty Queen Suthida said, “I firmly intend to carry forward the royal aspirations of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother, as His Majesty the King intends to treasure, preserve, and build on our heritage, following the footsteps of the Royal Parents – His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great and Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother.”
On the occasion of Her Majesty Queen Suthida’s birthday anniversary, 3 June 2025, members of the public are invited to appreciate the beauty of light decorations along Ratchadamnoen Klang and Ratchadamnoen Nok roads in Bangkok from now on until 7 June, between 17.00 and 24.00 hr. They are also invited to attend an audience with Their Majesties the King and Queen on 3 June at 17.00 hr at the ubosot of the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, where a ceremony to mark the birthday of Her Majesty will be performed.
