Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Audrey Azoulay has presented a commemorative medal to Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya in recognition of Her Royal Highness’ s exceptional work in preserving cultural heritage, promoting the fine arts, and advancing Thailand’s cultural and creative industries.
The medal presentation took place at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris on 18 July 2025. Her Royal Highness visited the UNESCO Headquarters at the invitation of Mrs. Azoulay.
The Princess is determined to continue Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother's work to preserve and promote Thai textiles in the global arena. Her Royal Highness has played a vital role in developing the weaving of Thai textiles and reviving the arts and crafts of Thailand, especially in the support of textile weaving and product development for a more modern market to promote Thailand’s fashion and textile industry.
In her discussion with the Director-General of UNESCO, Her Royal Highness stated that Thailand had proposed Chud Thai, or Thai costume, to be inscribed on the UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2026.
Chud Thai demonstrates fine craftsmanship, beautiful designs, and distinctive weaving techniques. The Queen Mother played an important role in developing Chud Thai in 1960, when she began to establish national costumes for Thai ladies. With the development, eight styles of Thai costumes for ladies came into being for use on various occasions.
On 14 May 2025, Princess Sirivannavari graciously presided over the exhibition “Chud Thai Through the Ages: Weaving History, Craft and Identity” at the Royal Thai Embassy in London.
The exhibition showcased modern adaptations of Thai textiles and specially curated garments designed by renowned Thai designers using traditional fabrics. It also presented rare woven textiles, traditional Thai patterns, and contemporary adaptations of Thai textile designs created by Her Royal Highness. These works reflect Her Royal Highness’s continued dedication to preserving, sustaining, and further developing Thailand’s rich textile heritage.
