Observance of Thai Women’s Day in Honor of the Queen Mother

Various activities are held in Thailand throughout the month of August each year to celebrate the birthday of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother, 12 August. Recognized as the eminent role model of Thai women, Her Majesty the Queen Mother always promoted their well-being.

As proposed jointly by the Ministry of Interior, the National Council of Women of Thailand, and women’s groups across the country, the Cabinet on 29 July 2003, acknowledged the designation of 1 August each year Thai Women’s Day. The reason is that 1 August usually marks the start of activities carried out to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen Mother’s birthday. Her Majesty was then asked to grant permission for the observance of Thai Women’s Day to be in her honor on this special occasion.

Women’s groups and public and private sector organizations nationwide join hands each year with the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security in organizing the celebration of Thai Women’s Day in honor of the Queen Mother. The theme for the celebration this year is “Thai Women Unite to Sustainably Treasure, Preserve, and Build on the Queen Mother’s Aspirations.”

The presentation of pins of honor to outstanding Thai women is a highlight of the celebration each year, with Her Majesty Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana presiding over the presentation ceremony on 1 August 2025 at 16.00 hr.

Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, who is recognized as the Mother of the Thai Nation, has given immense support to the cause of Thai women. For instance, Her Majesty has sponsored programs and organizations providing educational and training opportunities to enable women to improve their economic and social welfare, while enhancing appreciation for their national cultural heritage.

Her Majesty’s exceptional leadership in fostering the role of Thai women has received international recognition in the form of awards and honorary degrees from many institutions and organizations, such as the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, and Stanford University in California.
