A commemorative event will be held in honor of King Ananda Mahidol (Rama VIII), on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of the King, 20 September 2025.
The event will take place at Wat Suthat Thepwararam in Phra Nakhon District, Bangkok, from 20 to 27 September 2025, between 11.00 and 20.30 hr.
It will consist of several activities, including an exhibition on the life and work of King Rama VIII, cultural shows, demonstrations of Thai wisdom heritage, a night museum program at the Supreme Patriarch (Phae Tissadeva Mahathera) Residence Museum, a Buddhist-themed light garden display, a marketplace selling a wide variety of products, and a contest of sets of nine altar tables.
Light displays will decorate the area around Wat Suthat during the period. On 20 September, at 07.30 hr, an alms-giving ceremony to offer food to 100 monks will be held at Wat Suthat, followed by a religious ceremony and a ceremony to present floral offerings as a tribute to King Rama VIII. Similar activities will also be held in the provinces and in foreign countries through Thai embassies and consulates.
On this occasion, the Treasury Department is producing commemorative coins, and Thailand Post will issue commemorative stamps. The Office of the Permanent Secretary, Prime Minister’s Office, will publish the commemorative book Young Royals – Young Monarchs, written by Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana Krom Luang Naradhiwas Rajanagarinda.
King Ananda Mahidol, the eighth monarch of the Royal House of Chakri, was born on 20 September 1925 in Heidelberg, Germany. He was the second child of His Royal Highness Prince Mahidol of Songkla and Mom Sangwan Mahidol, who was later installed as Her Royal Highness Princess Srinagarindra Boromrajajonani.
King Ananda Mahidol had one elder sister, Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana Krom Luang Naradhiwas Rajanagarinda, and one younger brother, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great (Rama IX).
