Her Majesty Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana represented the Thai sailing team in receiving a gold medal from His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua at the 33rd Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games).
Her Majesty the Queen joined the sailing races of the Keelboat SSL47 event from 15 to 18 December 2025 at the Ocean Marina Yacht Club in Chon Buri Province. The medal presentation ceremony took place on the evening of 18 December when an announcement was made that the Thai national team secured first place in the event.
Apart from the gold medal, Her Majesty the Queen also received the Games’ mascot doll from His Majesty the King in this historic moment. The silver medal was awarded to Malaysia and the bronze medal to Myanmar. On this occasion, Their Majesties the King and Queen also posed for photographs with athletes from the top three countries.
This marked the first time Queen Suthida competed at the SEA Games. She served as navigator and strategist of the Thai national sailing team, and this role showed Her Majesty’s sporting talent.
Her Majesty Queen Suthida was not the first member of the Royal Family to win a gold medal in sailing. In 1967, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great (Rama (IX) and his eldest daughter, Princess Ubol Ratana, joined the Fourth Southeast Asian Peninsular Games, the SEAP Games, now SEA Games.
King Bhumibol won the gold medal for yachting, O.K. class. He shared the honor with Princess Ubol Ratana, who was his crew. Her Majesty Queen Sirikit was invited to present the gold medal to King Bhumibol.
The historical moment took place on 16 December 1967, when the whole country rejoiced and took pride in the royal victory. The day of 16 December each year was, therefore, picked as Thailand’s National Sports Day to commemorate this historic event.
