Royal Visit to Sweden Highlights Longstanding Ties between Thailand and Sweden

The royal visit of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua and Her Majesty Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana to the Kingdom of Sweden from 29 April to 2 May 2026 underscores the longstanding Thai-Swedish relations and close cooperation between the two countries.

The visit is at the invitation of His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden to attend the celebrations marking the 80th birthday anniversary of the Swedish monarch. The two Royal Families of Thailand and Sweden also share a close and longstanding relationship.

Thailand-Sweden relations began in 1868, when both countries signed the Treaty of Friendship, Commerce, and Navigation during the reign of King Mongkut (Rama IV), and further strengthened by King Chulalongkorn (Rama V)'s visit to Ragunda, Sweden, in 1897, as part of his historic first trip to Europe. King Chulalongkorn was received by King Oscar II at that time. The visit served as a bridge, introducing Thailand and Sweden to each other and marking the beginning of bilateral relations that continue to this day. It also laid the foundation for a lasting friendship between the two kingdoms.

The Ragunda Municipality organizes an event each year in commemoration of King Chulalongkorn's visit at the King Chulalongkorn Memorial Pavilion in Ragunda. Built to commemorate the King's visit to Sweden on 19 July 1897, the pavilion stands as a symbol of Thai-Swedish friendship.

His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) and Her Majesty Queen Sirikit paid a state visit to Sweden in 1960. Her Majesty Queen Silvia of Sweden visited Thailand in October 2017 to attend the Royal Cremation of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great.

Both countries signed the Thailand–Sweden Strategic Partnership on 26 August 2025, establishing a framework for strategic political dialogue and enhanced cooperation in trade and investment, defence, green transition, innovation, education, and the promotion of closer people-to-people ties. In 2025, more than 236,000 Swedish visitors travelled to Thailand, while the Thai community in Sweden is estimated at around 40,000 people.

Over the past 158 years, Thailand and Sweden, starting with the Royal Families, have strengthened cordial relations and close cooperation across various sectors. The outlook also remains promising for deepening bilateral ties at all levels.
