Government Holds Events to Mark Centennial Celebration of Queen Rambhai Barni’s Legacy

The Government on 22 May 2026 held alms-giving and Buddhist chanting ceremonies to dedicate merit to Queen Rambhai Barni, the Queen of the Seventh Reign, in commemoration of the centennial celebration of the Queen’ s legacy, honored by the United Nations Education, Science, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The events took place at 07.00 hr at Wat Ratchabophit in Bangkok. Deputy Prime Minister Songsak Thongsri was assigned by the Prime Minister to preside over these ceremonies, which were also joined by the President of the National Assembly, the President of the Senate, the President of the Administrative Court, and heads of independent organizations and their spouses, as well as senior officials from various agencies.

The day of 22 May marks the death anniversary of Queen Rambhai Barni (1904-1984), the Queen of King Prajadhipok (Rama VII). Born on 20 December 1904, the Queen proved to be an ideal help-mate for King Prajadhipok since she became Queen in 1926. After granting the first constitution to the Thai people, the King traveled to Europe, accompanied by Queen Rambhai Barni, to have an eye operation. While residing in England, the King abdicated in March 1935.

After King Prajadhipok’s death in 1941, the Queen remained in England for another seven years and returned to Thailand with the King’s relics in 1949. In Thailand, Queen Rambhai Barni led a quiet life, while taking the initiative to develop a sustainable farm in Chanthaburi Province, promoting agricultural innovation and community empowerment.

She sold Suan Ban Kaeo Palace in Chanthaburi to the Ministry of Education to build a teacher’s training college, which is now Rambhai Barni Rajabhat University. The Queen also supported activities concerning medicine and public health, leading to the establishment and development of Prapokklao Hospital in Chanthaburi to provide local people with access to healthcare of high quality.

The gentle Queen found ways to help improve the lives of local residents. She initiated occupational training for women in the weaving of reed mats, so that they would be able to earn more income and become self-reliant.

Queen Rambhai Barni also played a visible public role during a time when few women held leadership positions. Fluent in English and French, she traveled widely, engaged in intercultural dialogue, and supported the Free Thai Movement during World War II.

UNESCO has included the 100th anniversary of Queen Rambhai Barni’s contributions to education, social development, and gender equality in its “Anniversaries Celebration” program for 2026-2027.

The Government has set 22 May 2026 to 31 December 2027 as the period to mark the centennial celebration of the Queen’ s legacy. The organizing of exhibitions in honor of the Queen is among commemorative events on this special occasion.
