State Visit of Their Majesties the King and Queen Highlights Longstanding Relations between Thailand and France

His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua (Rama X) and Her Majesty Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana are paying a State Visit to the French Republic from 28 June to 2 July 2026 at the invitation of Mr. Emmanuel Macron, President of the French Republic.

According to the Bureau of the Royal Household, this visit constitutes the third occasion in history on which a reigning Thai monarch has paid a state visit to the French Republic. The first was made by King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) in 1897, and the second by King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great (Rama (IX) in 1960.

This ongoing third State Visit is especially significant, as it takes place 340 years after the first contact between Thailand and France made in 1685, and marks at the same time the 170th anniversary of the establishment of Thailand-France diplomatic relations in 1856. This State Visit thus serves to strengthen and build on the enduring, steadfast friendship between the two countries.

On this occasion, Their Majesties will also visit the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris to view the exhibition "La Mode en Majesté: Royal Thai Dress From Tradition to Modernity." Organized under the patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya, the exhibition highlights the evolution of Royal Thai Court attire and its representation on the global stage.

The longstanding relations between Thailand and France have remained strong and stable for over three centuries. These ties date back to 1685, when a French diplomatic mission led by Chevalier de Chaumont, under King Louis XIV, visited the Siamese court of King Narai the Great during the Ayutthaya period. The signing of their Treaty of Friendship, Commerce, and Navigation took place in 1856.

Both sides recently agreed to implement the “Joint Action Plan to Strengthen the Thai-French Partnership 2026-2028,” an important step toward elevating bilateral relations to a strategic partnership.

The State Visit of Their Majesties the King and Queen of Thailand to France marks another milestone in the longstanding and robust relationship between Thailand and France.
