Their Majesties the King and Queen on 30 June 2026 visited the exhibition “La Mode en Majesté: Haute Couture et Tradition à la Cour de Thaïlande” at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. The visit was made at the invitation of Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya.
Organized under the patronage of Her Royal Highness, the exhibition "La Mode en Majesté: Royal Thai Dress From Tradition to Modernity," held from 13 May to 1 November 2026, commemorates the 340th anniversary of the first contact between Thailand and France and the 170th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Upon arrival, Their Majesties were received by Princess Sirivannavari, Mrs. Catherine Pégard, Minister of Culture of the French Republic, and Mr. Lionel Sauvage, President of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs. The Princess presented an overview of the exhibition, while Mrs. Bénédicte Gady briefed Their Majesties on collaboration between Thailand and France in organizing this exhibition. Their Majesties then viewed the exhibition at the Christine and Stephen A. Schwarzman Gallery.
The exhibition is presented through seven thematic sections, exploring the evolution of Royal Thai Court attire and its representation on the global stage. Highlights include the story of Thai-French cultural exchanges through royal attire; the Eight Styles of Thai National Costume introduced under the royal initiative of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother; tributes to Thailand's master artisans; haute couture creations by Pierre Balmain for Her Majesty Queen Sirikit; Thailand's renowned brocade and mudmee silk traditions; and contemporary Thai fashion inspired by the country's rich cultural heritage.
The exhibition showcases over 200 pieces, including royal gowns, garments, and accessories designed by French couturier Pierre Balmain in collaboration with the renowned embroidery house Lesage, as well as works by Thai designers.
It also supports Thailand's nomination of “Chud Thai: The Knowledge, Craftsmanship and Practices of the Thai National Costume” to be inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2026.
