Although Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother has passed away, her lifelong devotion to the nation lives on in the hearts of all Thai people. Every year on 12 August, Her Majesty's birthday is observed as National Mother's Day, honoring her legacy as the Mother of the Land.

To mark National Mother’s Day each year, the National Council on Social Welfare of Thailand selects outstanding mothers to receive the “Model Mother” awards. Concurrently, awards are presented to individuals recognized as dutiful children for their exemplary devotion to their mothers.

Originally, Thailand observed 15 April as National Mother’s Day as designated by the Cabinet in 1950. The celebration of National Mother’s Day was later discontinued. For over half a century, with the genuine concern and loving care of a mother, Her Majesty Queen Sirikit steadfastly supported occupational development to uplift and supplement family incomes. In grateful appreciation, the National Council on Social Welfare of Thailand proposed designating Her Majesty’s birthday as National Mother’s Day in 1976. Upon Cabinet approval, the celebration was officially resumed that same year.

The Queen’s motherly love earned her many words of praise, as well as affection and respect from her people. Her Majesty worked side by side with King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great to eliminate difficulties within the Kingdom. Throughout the long period, Her Majesty never complained of weariness but was always happy to be in the midst of people. 

Her Majesty promoted the development of Thai people beyond their imagination. Following in the footsteps of King Bhumibol, Queen Sirikit initiated numerous projects, covering a wide range of areas, such as humanitarian work, Thai arts and culture, education, income generation, and conservation and preservation of biological diversity. 

One example of Her Majesty’s maternal care and devotion to her people was her establishment of the SUPPORT Foundation (Foundation for the Promotion of Supplementary Occupations and Related Techniques). This initiative continues not only to provide supplementary income to farming families but also to preserve traditional Thai handicrafts.
