Significant Growth of Thai Gem and Jewelry Exports

Thailand’s gem and jewelry exports have increased significantly. The Government is ready to provide entrepreneurs with greater trade opportunities and promote Thai products in the international market, under the “Local to Global” concept.

Speaking on 9 March 2023, Deputy Secretary-General to the Prime Minister and Acting Government Spokesperson Anucha Burapachaisri quoted a report by the Federation of Thai Industries that Thai gem and jewelry exports in 2022 reached more than 15 billion US dollars, accounting for an increase of 49.8 percent over 2021.

Gems and jewelry rank third in Thailand’s total export value. Exports of gems and jewelry are expected to expand further, by 10-15 percent in 2023. Important products that recorded strong export growth include gold, gold jewelry, polished and cut diamonds, silver jewelry, and polished and cut hard gems.

Major markets for these export items include the United States, India, Hong Kong, Germany, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Switzerland, Belgium, the United Arab Emirates, and Japan.

Elaborate craftsmanship in polishing and design, as well as product quality, are prominent features of Thai gems and jewelry that make them attractive to buyers and have helped them gain international recognition. This reflects Thailand’s readiness to become a top gem manufacturing and trading hub in the world.

The gem and jewelry industry generates employment for more than one million workers throughout its supply chain. Statistics compiled in 2022 show that there were about 12,892 entrepreneurs in this industry, an increase of 2.4 percent.

The Government will help create new entrepreneurs and develop the potential of existing entrepreneurs, while encouraging them to make use of digital technology in expanding channels through international marketing and increasing the value of the products.

Thailand will hold the trade fair “Jewelry and Gem ASEAN Bangkok” from 26 to 29 April 2023 at Halls 1 and 2, Queen Sirikit National Convention Center in Bangkok. Another trade fair, the “68th Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair,” will take place from 6 to 10 September 2023, also at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center.
