Throughout 2023, Thailand will celebrate the eighth cycle, or 96th, birthday anniversary of His Holiness Somdet Phra Ariyavongsagatayana, the Supreme Patriarch of Thailand. The Government is preparing various projects and activities to celebrate this special occasion.

Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha chairs the National Commission for the event, which was named “Celebrations on the Occasion of His Holiness Somdet Phra Ariyavongsagatayana the Supreme Patriarch of Thailand’s 96th Birthday Anniversary 26th June 2023.”

The celebratory activities include (1) a merit-making ceremony on 25 June 2023 at Wat Ratchabophit, Bangkok, (2) a royal merit-making ceremony on 26 June 2023 at Wat Ratchabophit and provincial halls in all provinces, and (3) the launch of a commemorative emblem, pins, a documentary, and postage stamps to celebrate this auspicious occasion.

The Committee on Projects and Activities, during its meeting on 15 March 2023 chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Don Pramudwinai, approved nine projects and activities. Among them are the establishment of a new meditation center, the granting of scholarships, and the development of a model temple in line with the Supreme Patriarch’s concept of “Green Buddhism for Sustainable Development.”

A mass ordination of 97 monks as a tribute to His Holiness the Supreme Patriarch will take place from 15 June to 2 July 2023 at Wat Ratchabophit.

Wat Ratchabophit will also arrange the signing of the well-wisher’s book at the temple from 19 to 24 June 2023.

Born in Ratchaburi province on 26 June 1927, His Holiness Somdet Phra Ariyavongsagatayana was appointed the country’s 20th Supreme Patriarch in 2017.
