Celebration of the 241st Anniversary of the Founding of Rattanakosin

The year 2023 marks the 241st anniversary of the founding of Rattanakosin, or Bangkok. The Ministry of Culture is joining hands with various agencies in organizing a cultural festival to celebrate this special occasion.

The festival will take place at the National Museum Bangkok and the Rattanakosin Old Town from 21 to 25 April 2023 and at the Santichaiprakan Park from 21 April to 7 May. It includes cultural shows, religious activities, demonstrations of Thai food preparation in a “retro market,” discussions, a photo contest, and a bazaar of Thai cultural products from all provinces.

An exhibition on the 10 monarchs of the Royal House of Chakri will also be held. Visitors will be provided with an opportunity to appreciate a night museum program.

Various learning centers will be open during the period, such as the Grand Palace, the National Museum Bangkok, the National Theater, the Pipit Banglamphu Museum, the Police Museum at Parutsakawan Palace, the Coin Museum, the Ratchadamnoen Contemporary Art Center, and the Museum Siam.

The organizing of this cultural festival is meant to recall the gracious kindness of King Rama I, who established Bangkok as the capital of Thailand. It is also intended to honor all Chakri kings, as they have brought stability and prosperity to the country throughout the period.

The history of Rattanakosin dates back to the year 1782, when King Rama I established Rattanakosin, or Bangkok, as the capital. He was also the founder of the Royal House of Chakri. Thailand observes Chakri Memorial Day as a public holiday on 6 April each year to commemorate the ascension to the throne by King Rama I.

Since its founding as the capital city, Bangkok has grown to become an important political, social, and economic center of Southeast Asia. It abounds in cultural and historical sites reflecting the country’s long history and unique culture.
