Thailand Ready to Evacuate Thai Nationals from Sudan

The Thai government is ready to evacuate Thai students and other people in Sudan, following the ongoing clashes between the Sudan Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces in Khartoum and surrounding areas since 15 April 2023.

Secretary-General of the Office of the National Security Council General Supot Malaniyom on 22 April 2023 chaired a meeting of relevant agencies through a videoconference system to discuss measures to help Thai nationals in Sudan.

There are about 300 Thai nationals living in Sudan, most of whom are Muslim students at the International University of Africa in Khartoum, and all are reportedly safe. These students came mainly from the southern border provinces of Thailand.

According to a report from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Royal Thai Embassy in Cairo with accreditation to Sudan has continuously been collaborating with the Thai communities, stressing the need to exercise extra caution. It has also been collaborating with other foreign diplomatic missions in Sudan and Egypt, including the embassies of Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines, among others, as well as international organizations, on situation monitoring and a possible joint evacuation plan.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has approved assistance in the form of relief supplies for Thai nationals through the Royal Thai Honorary Consulate in Khartoum. The Royal Thai Air Force is preparing aircraft for the evacuation of affected Thai nationals in the immediate vicinity of the conflict.

In case of emergency, they may contact the Rapid Response Center via the Ministry of Foreign Affairs: 096-165-7120/096-352-0513/096-352-9015, or the Royal Thai Embassy in Cairo: +201-0194-01243, or consular.cai@mfa.go.th.

Meanwhile, Deputy Government Spokesperson Rachada Dhnadirek said that the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Center would take care of the Thai students, such as arranging lodgings for them upon their arrival, and ensuring that they would be able to transfer their credits to continue their studies in Thailand.

She said that a central coordinating center had been established to coordinate with the parents of the Thai students studying in Sudan. The hotline 1880 has also been set up to offer services on the issue.
