Smooth Elections of the House Speaker and Two Deputies

Deputy Secretary-General to the Prime Minister and Acting Government Spokesperson Anucha Burapachaisri said that Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha was pleased with the smooth elections of the House Speaker and two deputies in accordance with the democratic process.

The Prime Minister also hopes that the new government will be formed soon, saying that he will serve as prime minister until the new Cabinet is sworn in before assuming office.

The elections of the House Speaker and two deputies took place on 4 July 2023. Prachachart Party leader Wan Muhamad Noor Matha was elected the Speaker of the House of Representatives. Move Forward MP Padipat Suntiphada was elected the first deputy speaker and Pheu Thai MP Pichet Chuamuangpan the second deputy speaker.

Aged 79, Mr. Wan Nor entered politics in 1979 and held several important political posts in the past, such as the House Speaker, the deputy prime minister, the minister of interior, the minister of transport, and the minister of agriculture and cooperatives.

He said that he would perform his duty as the new House Speaker with neutrality and would adopt the advice of His Majesty the King as guidelines.

His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua, accompanied by Her Majesty Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana, presided over the opening of the new parliament on 3 July 2023. In his royal address at the opening ceremony, His Majesty the King called on Members of Parliament to put national interests as the ultimate goal.

His Majesty said that Members of Parliament should always be aware that they were representatives of the people to exercise the legislative power in passing various laws for the government to use in national administration.

He pointed out that the prosperity of the nation depends on the conscience, wisdom, abilities, and honesty of Members of Parliament. If they are always aware of this, they will be able to perform their duties successfully for the prosperity and stability of the people and the nation.
