Giving Major Boost to Secondary Tourism Destinations

The Government is stepping up efforts to promote tourism in secondary destinations nationwide in order to better distribute tourism income, in line with the vision “Ignite Tourism Thailand” announced by the Prime Minister.

Government Spokesperson Chai Wacharonke said that the Tourism Authority of Thailand is integrating its plan with those of relevant agencies to stimulate tourism in secondary tourist cities with the following five measures:

1. Upgrading the standards of accommodations, food shops, and tourism infrastructure;

2. Improving and developing tourism sites and landscapes around them to accommodate more tourist arrivals;

3. Developing tourism products and services in line with tourist behavior;

4. Developing activities linking with tourism routes in each province;

5. Enhancing the potential of the public transport system connecting tourism destinations.

These measures were discussed in a meeting of relevant agencies. Results of the meeting will be submitted to the National Tourism Policy Committee for consideration.

The Government believes that the promotion of secondary tourism destinations will help reduce disparities among the people in urban and rural areas. A target has been set to increase tourism income in secondary cities to 360 billion baht in 2024, accounting for 30 percent of the country’s tourism revenue from domestic markets, which now stands at 1.2 trillion baht.

The Government Spokesperson said that the TAT has launched a campaign called “365 Days of Wonders in Secondary Cities” to promote tourism in secondary cities throughout 2024. Soft power items in each region of the country have been used as selling points to attract more tourist arrivals in secondary tourism destinations.
