Progress is accelerating for the Tipitaka English Version Project in honor of His Majesty the King on the auspicious occasion of the sixth-cycle, or 72nd, birthday anniversary of His Majesty this year.

The project has been carried out by the Ministry of Culture, the Sangha Supreme Council of Thailand, and the National Office of Buddhism. It was launched in 2019 as a tribute to His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua on the occasion of his coronation and proclamation of himself as the Royal Patron of Buddhism.

The project aims to make the sacred Buddhist texts more accessible to a global audience. Under this project, the Tipitaka in the Pali language with Thai script is being translated into English. Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn accepted the responsibility of serving as an adviser to the project.

The Most Venerable Professor Dr. Phra Brahmapundit, member of the Sangha Supreme Council of Thailand and President of the International Council for the Day of Vesak, organized a workshop on the Tipitaka English Version Project on 16 May 2024, prior to the 19th United Nations Day of Vesak Celebration 2024 in Thailand.

The Bangkok Declaration of the 19th United Nations Day of Vesak was announced on 20 May 2024. In the declaration, participants in this event extended their admiration for the Tipitaka English Version Project.

The declaration said, “We, all the participants, also extend our profound admiration for the Royal Thai Tipitaka Translation Project, which involves the translation by Thai and international scholars of the complete 45 volumes of the Siamrath Edition of the Pali Tipitaka into English. This project has been launched by the Supreme Sangha Council of Thailand and generously supported by the Royal Government of Thailand in honour of the Coronation of His Majesty King Vajiralongkorn, Rama X. This year, to celebrate the 72nd Royal Birthday of His Majesty the King, one volume from each of the three collections of the Tipitaka will be published.”
