Government Spokesperson Chai Wacharonke said that Prime Minister Srettha Thavsin had thanked all relevant agencies for designing a set of uniforms for Thai athletes participating in the upcoming Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Games from 26 July to 11 August.
The uniforms feature patterns from Ban Chiang, a World Heritage Site in the northeastern province of Udon Thani. The design team came from Grand Sport and the Fabric and Textile Creative Design Center at Udon Thani Rajabhat University.
The team jointly conducted research and sought advice from the Ban Chiang National Museum, the Fine Arts Department, and local communities that still continue the tradition of weaving, dyeing fabric with indigo, and making pottery. Then it incorporated these patterns into creating modern uniforms to be shown on the international stage.
The Government Spokesperson said that the uniforms reflected the unique Thai identity and local wisdom, under the theme “Be Our Spirit,” which unites Thai hearts as one.
He said that the innovative use of recycled plastic bottles for creating polo shirts also showed a commitment to reducing impacts from global warming for sustainability, with an emphasis on environmental protection. This will help promote Thailand’s “soft power,” as well, in combination with Thai cultural heritage.
The Government Spokesperson said that the Prime Minister had praised the design team and relevant agencies for making Thailand’s soft power and the Ban Chiang Archaeological Site better known internationally. Ban Chiang has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992. It was apparently settled as far back as 6,000 years ago. The spectacular finds at Ban Chiang include bronze utensils and ornaments, painted pottery, and bronze and iron weapons.
The Prime Minister urged Thai people to show support for Thai athletes participating in the Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Games, the Government Spokesperson said.
