Thailand and Malaysia Express Intention toward Peace and Development

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia, during their meeting on 3 August 2024, expressed their political will toward peace and development for the well-being of Thai and Malaysian people.

The meeting took place during their joint working visit to Su-ngai Kolok, Narathiwat Province, in southern Thailand, and Rantau Panjang, Kelantan State of Malaysia. The two prime ministers also visited the border crossing bridge over the Kolok River, connecting Rantau Panjang town with Su-ngai Kolok town.

They followed up on the progress of the bridge construction project, which is the second Rantau Panjang - Sungai Kolok Bridge across the Kolok River. The bridge project will facilitate the travel of people and goods transportation between Thailand and Malaysia. It will also help boost tourism, promote cross-border trade, and connect special economic zones along the Thai-Malaysian border.

The Thai and Malaysian prime ministers agreed to jointly develop the southern provinces of Thailand and the northern states of Malaysia, especially through (1) road and rail connectivity to enable more cross-border transport of goods and people, (2) economic development especially concerning the joint production of the two "rubber cities" of Songkhla in Thailand and Kedar in Malaysia, as well as the halal industry, to take advantage of the relative strengths of Thailand and Malaysia, and (3) putting the already established joint tourism idea under the “Six Countries, One Destination” into concrete action.

Thailand and Malaysia aim for common peace and prosperity. They also agreed to work closely together in maintaining peace along their border and to link their economic and tourism development.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Maris Sangiampongsa is scheduled to visit Malaysia to co-chair the 15th Meeting of the Thailand-Malaysia Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation and the sixth Ministerial Meeting of the Thailand-Malaysia Committee on Joint Development Strategy for Border Areas with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia Dato' Seri Utama Haji Mohamad bin Haji Hasan on 6 August 2024, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The meetings aim to follow up with all dimensions of bilateral cooperation between Thailand and Malaysia, and to promote new areas of collaboration in response to new global challenges, such as digital transformation and food and energy security.
