A new route has been opened between Bangkok and the northeastern province of Khon Kaen to promote Thailand’s wellness tourism and “tourism for all,” under the concept of universal accessibility development.

The concept involves universal design infrastructure that allows individuals with disabilities access to key tourism destinations and attractions. Minister of Tourism and Sports Sermsak Pongpanit on 9 August 2024 presided over the opening of the new route at Wat Nong Waeng, Mueang District, Khon Kaen Province. 

During the opening ceremony, Minister Sermsak emphasized the Government’s firm intention to drive wellness tourism and “MICE for All” to accommodate older persons and those with special needs so that they are able to enjoy travelling. Thailand recognizes the right of everyone to access tourism sites and services on an equal basis.

He pointed out that the promotion of wellness tourism was also in response to the Government’s strategic plan to develop Thailand into a global medical and wellness hub. Apart from generating enormous income for local communities, the wellness industry will also enable Thailand to add value to its health products and medical services.

Khon Kaen Province is the commercial, administrative, and educational center of northeastern Thailand. The province is recognized as a transport, logistics, and tourism center. It is equipped with modern facilities for the "meetings, incentives, conventions, and exhibitions,” or MICE, business.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) in June 2023 signed a Letter of Intent with the Khon Kaen Jockey Club to promote Thailand, in particular the northeast region, as an eco-tourism destination for sports, medical, wellness, and cultural tourism.

Khon Kaen was also among the nine pilot routes in popular provinces selected by TAT to promote the concept of universal accessibility and “tourism for all.”
