Coalition Parties Support Pheu Thai Leader Paetongtarn Shinawatra as Prime Minister Candidate

The political parties in the coalition government have expressed their support for the nomination of Pheu Thai Leader Paetongtarn Shinawatra as the next prime minister of Thailand.

The coalition partners joined a press conference with the Pheu Thai Party on 15 August 2024 at Shinawatra Tower 3 in Bangkok, after the executive board of Pheu Thai had voted to nominate its leader, who is former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s daughter, as its candidate to become Thailand’s 31st prime minister.

The 11 coalition parties include Pheu Thai, Bhumjaithai, Palang Pracharath, United Thai Nation, Chartthaipattana, Prachachat, Thai Rumphalang, Chartpattanakla, Seri Ruam Thai (Thai Liberal), Plung Sungkom Mai, and Thai Counties.

The House of Representatives is scheduled to convene on 16 August at 10.00 hr to vote for the new prime minister, after the Constitutional Court dismissed Mr. Srettha Thavisin as prime minister on 14 August for an ethical violation.

Ms. Paetongtarn thanked all coalition partners for supporting her nomination as the new prime minister. She regretted that Mr. Srettha had to be dismissed, saying that Mr. Srettha had worked at full force for the country. However, the country must move forward. Pheu Thai, as the core party of the coalition government, therefore, decided to unite with other coalition partners to show to the people their determination to work in tackling the country’s problems.

The coalition has a total of 314 MPs in the 493-seat House of Representatives. A majority of the 493 members is required to approve the new prime minister.
