The House of Representatives, during its special session on 16 August 2024, voted Pheu Thai Party Leader Paetongtarn Shinawatra as the new prime minister of Thailand, with majority support.
Ms. Paetongtarn was endorsed as the only candidate for the prime ministerial post. A total of 319 members of the House of Representatives voted to support the nomination of Ms. Paetongtarn, while 145 voted against it and 27 abstained.
On the same day, House Speaker Wan Muhamad Noor Matha submitted the name of the new prime minister to His Majesty the King for a Royal Command appointing the 31st prime Minister of Thailand.
Ms. Paetongtarn, the third and youngest child of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, will become the youngest-ever prime minister of Thailand. Aged 38, she was born on 21 August 1986, and graduated with a bachelor's degree from the Faculty of Political Science, Chulalongkorn University, in Bangkok. She also received a master’s degree in international hotel management from the University of Surrey, United Kingdom.
Ms. Paetongtarn is a niece of the first woman Prime Minister of Thailand, Yingluck Shinawatra. After being appointed as the new prime minister, she will become Thailand’s second woman prime minister. Ms. Paetongtarn is married with two children.
