Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra Delivers Policy Statement

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra delivered the policy statement of the Council of Ministers in the National Assembly on 12 September 2024, stressing that the Government would collaborate with all sectors in creating harmonization in Thai society and transforming challenges into opportunities for development and economic and social equality of all Thais.

The Prime Minister indicated that among the challenges faced by Thailand were household debt, an aging society, the drug menace, lack of liquidity among SMEs, online crime, and climate change.

She stated that 10 urgent policies to be implemented by the Government would include 1) pushing for debt restructuring of the whole system, 2) promoting Thai entrepreneurs, especially SME operators, 3) reducing prices of energy and public utilities, 4) bringing the informal economy and the underground economy into the tax system, 5) stimulating the economy and pushing for the digital wallet scheme, 6) modernizing traditional agricultureadding value to agricultural products, and increasing farmers’ income under the concept of "market-driven innovation to increase income," 7) promoting tourism, 8) solving the drug problem on a full-cycle basis, 9 accelerating the tackling of crime issues, online crime, and transnational crime, and 10) developing the people’s potential and arranging social welfare in accordance with the changing situation. 

The Government also has medium-term and long-term policies in order to build on developments in the production and service sectors, enhance Thailand’s competitiveness, and lay out foundations for the development of Thailand in the future.  

For instance, the Government will promote the transition from traditional internal combustion engines in the automotive industry to electric vehicles. It will emphasize a creative culture to promote Thailand’s “soft power” and local wisdom.

Greater emphasis will be placed on the green economy or eco- friendly economy, digital economy, care and wellness economy, and medical hub.

The Government will continue investments in mega transport projects, develop the public facility system of high quality and digital technology, introduce major tax restructuring with an emphasis on income distribution, and enhance the efficiency of the state land management.

The Government will restore the confidence of Thai people and foreigners through the strengthening of the democratic system, with stability, the rule of law, and transparency. It will also continue the “proactive economic diplomacy” policy.
