The Cabinet, during its meeting on 17 September 2024, approved a budget of 3,045 million baht from the central fund of the 2024 national expenditure for use to help flood-hit people during the 2024 rainy season.

The amount was proposed by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, Ministry of Interior. It will be offered to flood victims through the Government Savings Bank, following the decision by the Government to instruct the Ministry of Interior, through the department, to propose preliminary allowances for families affected by floods.

According to the department, a total of 338,391 families in 57 provinces have been affected by floods during this rainy season. At the Cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra told the Ministry of Interior to accelerate the process of providing assistance to the affected people. All relevant government agencies were also instructed to consider measures to provide additional rehabilitation assistance to help flood victims, apart from the normal case.

She said that the Flood, Storm, and Landslide Relief Operations Center, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Phumtham Wechayachai, would meet on 18 September to discuss rehabilitation measures.

The Prime Minister also said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was holding discussions with various countries sharing the Mekong River, such as Myanmar, on ways to jointly ease the flood problem.

She stressed that serious discussions were needed to seek solutions to the issue, which has reoccurred over a number of years. Currently, Thailand is serving as co-chair of the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation framework with China for the term 2024-2025.
