Key Takeaways From Remarks given by Mr. Maris Sangiampongsa Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand ‘Meet the Press #2’ / 19 September 2024 / Buakaew Room / MFA

1.    Addressing Transboundary Issues
•    High on the agenda is tackling the issue of narcotic drugs, water management, call center scams and air pollution (PM 2.5). Thailand will pursue, as a matter of urgency, joint efforts and international cooperation with China, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar and Viet Nam to address these transboundary issues.
•    Recent meetings with China and the Lao PDR regarding water management in the Mekong River Basin area and coordination with Myanmar to alleviate the impact of the recent flooding have been productive and underscore the value of subregional cooperation to protect our people.

2.    Introducing Destination Thailand Visa (DTV)
•    This long-term visa (with a stay up to 180 days per visit) targets global talent such as digital nomads wishing to live and work remotely in Thailand. Along with this new visa type and expanded visa exemptions, Thailand is pursuing an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system to enhance efficiency of entry and ensure safety and security for all.
•    In the longer term, a single tourist visa under the “Six Countries, One Destination” policy reflects a clear aspiration to promote tourism and connectivity in the sub-region.

3.    Promoting Thailand’s Soft Power
•    Unique, local Thai products will be carefully curated to venture, “From Local to Global” on stage at Thai Festivals worldwide, in nearly 50 locations across 30 countries by 2025. This initiative is reflective of my Ministry’s direct involvement and contribution to the Soft Power promotion scheme.

4.    Thai Citizens Abroad
•    Full assistance to Thai citizens abroad, especially in emergency situations, remains an utmost priority for the Foreign Ministry, which stays actively engaged to secure the release of Thai hostages in the Israel-Hamas conflict. Protecting the rights and well-being of our Thai workers abroad in various countries will also continue to be a top priority.

5.    Active Promoter of Peace and Common Prosperity
•    Thailand will continue to be proactive in engaging key countries, especially ASEAN, in dialogue on Myanmar. Thailand’s role is firmly rooted in our humanitarian tradition, with a recent nine-million-baht donation presented to the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on disaster management (AHA Centre) to assist those affected in Myanmar.
•    Thailand will also advance peace and economic cooperation along the Thai-Malaysian border, as part of overall stepped-up efforts to promote peace and common prosperity with our neighbouring countries
