Prime Minister Satisfied with the Success of Her Participation in ASEAN Summits

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra was satisfied with the overall success of her participation in the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits and related summits in Vientiane, Lao PDR, on 9-11 October 2024.

The Prime Minister gave an interview with the Television Pool of Thailand on 11 October, saying that she had attended more than 20 meetings and discussions during the three-day period.

She said that she and Prime Minister of Singapore Lawrence Wong, who were both new to the meetings, were warmly welcomed by leaders of other ASEAN member states.  The summits discussed cooperation to increase economic opportunities and seek investment cooperation strategies.

Other major issues raised for discussion include ASEAN connectivity, water resource management, soft power, people-to-people contacts, human security, especially food security and green energy, and tourism. The discussions also touched on the issues of increasing direct flights and free-visa measures.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn stated that all participating countries shared the view of maintaining the regional peace of ASEAN. Concerning the situation in Myanmar, Thailand is ready to work with all ASEAN members to help bring about peace in Myanmar.

The Prime Minister also held bilateral talks with leaders of 12 countries, who expressed support for the “Six Countries One Destination” program, as well as the tackling of transboundary problems, water resource management, and climate change. She discussed technological exchange with the Prime Minister of Australia, saying that Thailand would like to learn from Australia’s experience and expertise in disaster management. In this regard, a working group will be set up to handle the issue.

In addition, as Thailand and China will celebrate the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic relations next year, the year 2025 will later be announced as the “Golden Year of Friendship,” with various activities to be organized throughout the year to celebrate this special occasion.
