The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society has set a direction for the use of cloud technology in Thailand in order to prepare for a “digital government” and pave the way for Thailand to become a leader in cloud technology in this region.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Economy and Society Prasert Jantararuangtong on 17 October 2024 chaired a meeting of the Cloud-First Policy Committee to discuss plans to move Thailand’s administration toward a digital government to provide people with more efficient and better services.
in November 2023, Google entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, aimed at strengthening Thailand’s digital competitiveness and accelerating its cloud-first digital transformation.
In June 2024, the National Digital Economy and Society Commission approved the establishment of the Cloud-First Policy Committee to manage supply and demand of local cloud services. The policy will also improve the cloud ecosystem through the use of the digital system to enhance public services and ensure cybersecurity.
Later, on 30 September 2024, Mrs. Ruth Porat, President and Chief Investment Officer of Alphabet and Google, met Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra to discuss progress of the company’s investments in Thailand. On this occasion, the company announced its investment of one billion USD (35,000 million baht) in Thailand for the establishment of a data center and cloud region.
The Prime Minister explained that Thailand’s Cloud First Policy would enhance government digital services, data governance, and cybersecurity by adopting flexible regulatory approaches suitable for the digital era.
