The Cabinet, during its meeting on 19 November 2024, acknowledged a report on results of the crackdown on online fraud and transnational organized crime by the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society.
The report was submitted following the instruction of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra for relevant agencies to work together in an integrated manner in order to urgently tackle the rampant online crime problem, which affects a great number of people.
The Government has set a policy to address the problem of cybercrime and transnational organized crime to protect the interests of the people, as this problem remains serious and has caused huge damage to many people who are victims of online crime.
The Committee for the Prevention and Suppression of Technological Crime, chaired by Minister of Digital Economy and Society Prasert Jantararuangtong, held a meeting on 20 September 2024 with relevant agencies, such as the Royal Thai Police, the Bank of Thailand, the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission, and the Anti-Money Laundering Office.
The performance of the committee within 30 days involves its move to amend the law to help the victims and prevent cybercrime, the arrest of cybercriminals involved in all kinds of online scam activities, such as online gambling and suspicious accounts referred to as “mule accounts,” and a ban on online gambling websites and harmful social media.
Moreover, various measures have been implemented to tackle the issues of mule accounts and SIM cards used for fraudulent activities and to accelerate the seizure of criminals’ bank accounts. Illegal telecom setups, as well as internet and telephone lines, along the border have not been allowed. Online sales of counterfeit goods have also been curbed.
The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society has established the Anti-Online Scam Operation Center (AOC), with the AOC 1441 hotline, to deal with online scams and assist victims. All relevant agencies met recently to enhance the operations of this center.
