Deputy Government Spokesperson Sasikarn Wattanachan has urged all Thais to serve as good hosts to welcome international tourists from all parts of the world.
Ms. Sasikarn stated that Thailand remains one of the most popular destinations in the eyes of visitors from around the globe. It is a place of deep enchantment, with cultural diversity, cherished traditions and local way of life, and natural beauty.
She pointed out that Thailand also boasts beautiful seas, mountains, and waterfalls, as well as temples and historical sites of cultural significance. Thai food is considered one of the best in the world. The country is also well known for the hospitality of its people. All these provide a great tourism experience and impress all visitors to Thailand.
Ms. Sasikarn also said that six destinations in Thailand have been listed in the 2024 Green Destinations Top 100 Stories. The Green Destinations Top 100 Stories initiative by the Green Destinations Foundation aims to foster a sustainable and responsible tourism industry globally by sharing inspiring stories and best practices in sustainable tourism.
Each year, 100 destinations are selected for their effective initiatives that support environmental conservation, strengthen local communities, and promote responsible tourism. This year, more than 170 stories from 45 countries were submitted, with 129 stories being selected. These stories were evaluated by national experts and partners coordinated by Green Destinations. Selection criteria include story quality, ability to communicate the message, level of innovation, and the presence of all sustainability pillars.
The six destinations in Thailand were submitted by the Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (DASTA). They include (1) Wiang Phu Phiang Chae Haeng in Nan Province, (2) U Thong Ancient City in Suphan Buri Province, (3) Songkhla City in Songkhla Province, (4) Chiang Khan in Loei Province, (5) Hua Hin in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, and (6) Uthai Thani Old Town in Uthai Thani Province.
The stories from these destinations serve as examples and inspiration for others who want to adopt sustainable practices. They will be celebrated at the Green Destinations Global Conference 2024 in Chile on 10-12 December, with further recognition at the ITB Berlin event in March 2025.
