Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Suriya Jungrungreangkit stated that the Government is proceeding with its plan to invest in large transport infrastructure projects in an effort to develop Thailand into a regional logistics hub.
In his keynote address on the topic “Mobility Infrastructure for Sustainability’s Journey” at the seminar “Sustainability Forum 2025: Synergizing for Driving Business” in Bangkok on 4 December, Mr. Suriya said that the investment plan aims to improve connections for seamless rail, waterway, road, and air transport, while promoting road safety and reducing logistics costs.
In this regard, double-track and high-speed railways will be constructed and urban development will be carried out in response to local needs, in order to distribute wealth to regional areas of the country. Ports will be upgraded to increase their potential for cargo transport. Airports will also be expanded further and new flight routes will be opened to develop Thailand as a regional aviation hub.
Mr. Suriya said that he had delivered briefings on the policy of “using transport for greater opportunities for Thailand” as guidelines for all agencies under the Ministry of Transport to follow. The ministry will connect Thailand’s transport systems with transport networks in neighboring countries, as well.
The mega project “Landbridge” is being planned in southern Thailand, as an additional important route to support transportation and an important option for cargo transport in this region. The project will solve the problem of shipping commodities through the Malacca Strait, which is likely to become more congested. A study shows that it will help reduce transportation costs by 15-20 percent and save about three to five days in shipping time.
He said that the Government was accelerating the policy of capping the fare of all electric train lines in Bangkok and its perimeter at 20 baht. The policy is expected to be implemented in September 2025, and it will help reduce the cost of living for the public.
He also stated that the Ministry of Transport intends to enhance the efficiency of Thailand’s transport systems, create more trade and income opportunities for the people, and ease various problems, such as traffic congestion and PM 2.5 pollution.
