Preventing and Reducing Road Accidents during New Year Celebrations

The Government has opened a Road Safety Directing Center to prevent and reduce road accidents during the New Year festive season, when a great number of people travel for tourism and returning to their hometown.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul on 25 December 2024 presided over the opening of the center and chaired a meeting of provincial governors and representatives from relevant agencies.

The meeting discussed measures for road safety, under the campaign “Save driving, without accidents.” The campaign will be heightened during the 10-day period from 27 December 2024 to 5 January 2025.

Emphasis will be placed on the “area approach,” with the participation of all sectors and the implementation of various measures. These measures include road improvement to reduce the chance of accidents, safe vehicles, use of roads for transportation safety, and emergency medical and rescue services in case of road accidents.

The objective of the campaign is to bring down the number of road accidents and the death toll. Drunk driving has been cited as a major cause of road accidents, which result in great economic losses, in addition to loss of lives, injury, and property damage. Stricter law enforcement will be carried out, as well, to prevent and reduce road accidents.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports has launched a campaign to step up measures to ensure safety and security for Thai and foreign tourists during Christmas and New Year celebrations. It has opened “Thailand Tourist Police Application” to provide travelers with instant assistance and vital information. Multilingual interpreters are also ready to assist in five major languages: English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Russian.

Thailand’s Tourist Police Hotline (1155) also operates around the clock, providing multilingual assistance for emergencies or inquiries.
