Protecting Consumers from Substandard Products on E-Commerce Platforms

Relevant government agencies and online business operators are joining hands in protecting consumers from substandard imported products sold on e-commerce platforms.

Minister of Commerce Pichai Naripthaphan on 31 January 2025 presided over a ceremony for a declaration against imported substandard products available via online platforms. Participating in this event were 16 government agencies and e-commerce platform operators, namely the Food and Drug Administration, the Thai Industrial Standards Institute, the Electronic Transactions Development Agency, the Department of Intellectual Property, the Department of Business Development, the Department of Foreign Trade, BIGXSHOW, eBay, Lazada, LINE SHOPPING, Nex Gen Commerce, NocNoc, Shopee, TEMU, and TikTok Shop.

The declaration is an additional measure to be implemented together with strict law enforcement. Apart from protecting consumers from substandard goods, cooperation between the public and private sectors will also help create the e-commerce ecosystem for sustainable economic growth.

Both relevant government agencies and e-commerce platform operators will work together in raising public awareness about buying products of good quality. Guidelines on best practices will be worked out for use to deal with substandard products.

People have been concerned about the influx of imported cheap, poor-quality products and the entry of foreign e-commerce platforms, which have impacted Thai small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
The Government in October 2024 established a committee to manage and tackle issues of imported substandard products and foreign businesses that violate Thai law.

According to the Ministry of Commerce, with the strict supervision of the committee, the value of imported products via e-commerce from July to December 2024 came to 3,645 million baht a month on average. The amount represents a decline by 8 percent, compared with 3,957 million baht a month on average between January and June 2024.
