Thailand to Provide Aid to Myanmar Following Recent Earthquake

A group of 55 military personnel from the Royal Thai Armed Forces Headquarters departed for Myanmar on 30 March 2025 to coordinate the mission of humanitarian assistance and disaster relief to help the people of Myanmar following the recent devastating earthquake.

The group will launch their initial operations in Mandalay, Nay Pyi Taw, and Yangon. In the next step, the Thai government will work with various sectors in sending necessary items, such as food, pharmaceutical products, and medical equipment, to the affected areas in Myanmar.

The Government and the Royal Thai Armed Forces consider that Thailand is able to manage resources effectively to help Thai people affected by the earthquake situation, and that it also has the capacity to help Myanmar, as well, on a humanitarian basis and to maintain cordial relations between the two countries.

Meanwhile, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand Maris Sangiampongsa, together with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, will visit Myanmar on 5 April 2025 to hold consultations with Myanmar Foreign Minister Than Swe on assistance in the aftermath of the Myanmar earthquake. Malaysia serves as the Chair of ASEAN this year.

Mr. Maris attended a special meeting with other ASEAN foreign ministers on 30 March for discussions on the Myanmar earthquake. The meeting pledged support for Myanmar and Thailand in handling the impact of the earthquake and stressed the need to provide urgent humanitarian assistance to Myanmar. Thailand, as Myanmar’s close neighbor and with its significant role in ASEAN, is starting to provide assistance to Myanmar.

ASEAN has also issued a statement of solidarity and support following the powerful earthquake that struck central Myanmar on 28 March 2025, causing widespread devastation across parts of Myanmar and Thailand.
