Government Aims to Develop Thailand into AI Regional Hub

The Government attaches great importance to applying artificial intelligence (AI) for national development and aims to make Thailand an AI hub in this region.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra on 1 May 2025 chaired a meeting of the National AI Committee, which outlined directions to prepare infrastructure and manpower for AI development. The Prime Minister called for urgent action to develop AI technology to enhance Thailand’s competitiveness in digital technology, so that it is ready to generate more income, cope with emerging innovations, and develop human resources to keep pace with the changing world.

She said that the Government would emphasize efforts to promote the application of AI in three major areas. In the first area, human resources at all levels will be equipped with appropriate skills in using AI technology. The second area involves infrastructure development for AI application, such as the creation of platforms, databases, and models, as well as the AI ecological system.

In the third area, AI technology will be applied to develop various industries, especially the robotics industry, in order to enhance income generation for such potential industries as medical services, agriculture, and tourism.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Economy and Society Prasert Jantararuangtong said that a target had been set to train at least 10 million people as AI users, 90,000 as AI professionals, and 50,000 as AI developers within the next two years.

Moreover, he said, the Government will promote investment in digital infrastructure, such as cloud systems, data centers, GPU-based computing systems, and the development of an open-source AI platform. The objective is to promote the application of AI technology at affordable costs.

According to Mr. Prasert, data banks will be established to collect useful data for AI development in various sectors. As for data in the public sector, all government agencies will be urged to move toward full digital transformation by 2026. This investment is expected to involve no less than 500 billion baht, with contributions from both the public and private sectors, domestically and internationally.

In order to accelerate the application of AI, the Government will also support the establishment of a center of excellence for AI integration in each sector.
