Brainstorming Strategies and Charting the Way Forward for Thai Foreign Policy

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is holding the 2025 Meeting of Ambassadors and Consuls-General from 8 to 14 June 2025 in Bangkok, under the theme “Proactive and People-Centered Diplomacy: From Policy to Practice.”

The meeting aims to brainstorm strategies and chart the way forward for Thai foreign policy in a global landscape, which is undergoing significant transitions. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the program includes a royal audience graciously granted by His Majesty the King, a policy guidance from the Prime Minister, and consultations with senior government officials, the Prime Minister’s economic team, and relevant agencies and sectors.

These discussions will focus on key strategies to advance proactive diplomacy that promote Thailand’s security and economic interests in response to a rapidly evolving global landscape. It will also provide an opportunity for the ministry to lay out the country’s positioning and status on the global stage, as well as ways to promote and protect the interests of the country and the Thai people, both at home and abroad.

Over 100 participants are attending the meeting, including ambassadors, consuls-general, charges d'affaires, and acting consuls-general from 64 Thai embassies, 29 Thai consulates-general, four permanent missions of Thailand to international organizations, and the Thailand Trade and Economic Office. In addition, representatives of the “Team Thailand” overseas agencies will also virtually participate in the meeting.

In his keynote address on 22 May 2025 on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the establishment of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, Minister of Foreign Affairs Maris Sangiampongsa emphasized Thailand’s diplomatic approach, which has been guided by flexibility, stability, and a commitment to peace and cooperation amidst a changing global landscape.

He said, “We find ourselves at a notable juncture in history, with rising geopolitical and geo-economic tensions. The calm seas of cooperation have become unpredictable, as conflicts and insecurities continue to persist in many parts of the world.

“Thailand has always believed that those who endure are not those who resist the current, but those who move along with it wisely. So, Thailand will continue to build on our strengths, in pursuit of three specific aspirations we view as key in our current environment, namely maintaining strategic balance, fostering peace and stability, and advancing economic diplomacy.”
