Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, in her opening remarks at the 2025 Meeting of the Thai Ambassadors and Consuls-General on 9 June 2025, highlighted that Thailand’s foreign policy direction in the current global context must focus on two key issues.
First, enhancing and building upon Thailand’s strengths, particularly the country’s clear diplomatic positioning as a friendly-to-all nation and its commitment to working with the international community as an active promoter of peace and common prosperity.
Second, seizing new opportunities in a timely manner, particularly through advancing proactive economic diplomacy to strengthen Thailand’s economic capacity, driving current key growth engines, including the export and service sectors, while igniting new growth engines through attracting investments in target and future industries. This is crucial for strengthening the grassroots economy and uplifting the Thai people’s quality of life and livelihood.
According to a report from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Prime Minister emphasized the important role of Thai embassies and consulates-general at the forefront on the international stage. They were tasked to brainstorm and reinforce Thailand’s foreign policy strategies in order to secure maximum benefits for the country and the people amidst a rapidly evolving and challenging global landscape, particularly shifting global power dynamics and the emerging international order.
On this occasion, Minister of Foreign Affairs Maris Sangiampongsa stressed four key principles in advancing Thai foreign policy: (1) maintaining strategic balance with major powers and pursuing a multiple alignment approach through deepening engagement with other key partners, (2) taking part in shaping the emerging international order through various partnerships and frameworks, (3) enhancing international cooperation to maintain regional stability and security, and (4) driving proactive economic diplomacy.
The 2025 Meeting of the Thai Ambassadors and Consuls-General, held under the theme “Proactive and People-Centered Diplomacy: From Policy to Practice,” was attended by the Thai ambassadors and consuls-general from 98 overseas missions, executives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and representatives of the “Team Thailand” agencies abroad, who participated virtually.
