The Thai government is stepping up its efforts to crack down on transnational crime along the Thai-Cambodian border and seeking cooperation with the international community to tackle this problem, especially cybercrime.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra announced Thailand’s serious crackdown on cross-border scams after she chaired a meeting at Government House on 23 June 2025 to follow up on measures to suppress transnational crime.
The Prime Minister stated that transnational crime has affected the people’s living conditions and the country’s credibility at the international level. She quoted a report from the United Nations naming Cambodia as one of the world’s largest cyber-scam hubs, with a value of 600 billion baht a year.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn instructed all security agencies, the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, the Ministry of Interior, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to accelerate the suppression of scam operations along border areas.
For instance, stricter controls will be imposed on border crossings with Cambodia, with limited operating hours at the crossings. The controls will not be imposed for Cambodian students, patients, and consumers. Foreign tourists to Thailand will be prohibited from crossing the border for gambling and from taking flights to Siem Reap to visit casinos.
Moreover, the Government will carefully consider the suspension of oil exports to Cambodia, as they might be used for illegal activities. The Ministry of Commerce has prepared measures to help local farmers and small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) operators affected by the Thai-Cambodian border situation. Members of the public and private sectors have been urged to offer a helping hand by buying products from the affected farmers and SME operators.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will coordinate with various countries and international organizations to join forces with Thailand in fighting cybercrime along the border. In this regard, Thailand is ready to become an operation center against cyber scams in this region.
